Birthplace of William M. McCulloch, Civil Rights Champion, is marked at E. Jackson Street and Holmes County Trail in Holmesville.
Champion of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, McCullough was deeply affected by his early experience working in Jacksonville during the 1920s Florida land boom and the racial intolerance he saw there. On returning to Ohio to practice law he entered politics, becoming Speaker of the Ohio House and U.S. Congressman. As ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee he co-sponsored the 1964 Act and helped guide it to passage.
